Where is your pet ID, do they have ID all the time, are they covered if they go missing? Pets can go missing so quickly and easily, it is very important they have ID if it happens. We know as we have had this happen several times and it is terrifying! We all wear a collar with two tags all the time unless it is bedtime, and we are all chipped as well.
This is Tom, a cat Mom brought over from Germany back in 2007. He had to be allowed outside or he would pee in the house. His ears were tattooed at the rescue place in Germany and that was his ID. He was only here in the US for about eight months when he disappeared. Mom, Katie and Emma walked and walked looking for him for weeks and he was never found. To this day, Mom always wonders what happened to him. He should at least been chipped.
Us pups have two tags on our collars, one with our name, mom’s phone number, and our street address on the back side and the other is from the AKC for our chip, and we are all chipped.
The chip tag comes in all our colors so we each have one just for us. On the back side it has the chip number (I took my chip number off for the photo) and the phone number to call if we are found as well as our name. You can also get the rubber silencer for the tag so we don’t jingle all the time.
As you probably remember, Madison ran away in the dark in a strange neighborhood in Michigan in September 2021. She slipped out a small spot under the fence. Mom had checked the fence before she let us off leash but didn’t check behind the pine tree and that is where the hole was. Thankfully with a lot of people searching and being on it right away, we got her back in about twenty minutes. Mom will never trust strange fenced areas for us again. Gas station dog parks are “in” now, and Mom will not let us use them. Many have big gaps and unless you have a large dog, the dog could easily escape. We don’t recommend using them when you travel unless you really trust your dog.
I also got loose last summer. We now have signs on our two fence gates. The tree guy came to look at our trees and give mom an estimate for trimming but she didn’t know he was coming that day and she was not home. When she came home, she let us out in the yard like usual and suddenly I was racing across the neighbor’s yard. The tree guy left one gate wide open and I left. She used the snack trick to stop me and get me to come back. Despite the signs, she never lets us out without checking the gates since then.
Accidents happen but please make sure you have proper ID on your pet as they will have a much better success rate of being found and coming back home to you where they belong.
