Helen – WI – Deaf Dogs Rock

Meet adoptable deaf/visually impaired poodle mix puppy Helen who is looking for a loving forever home with someone who will cherish her and always keep her safe.

From her rescue advocate: MY AGE: 10 weeks (8/25) WEIGHT: 4 lbs. (8/25)

MY STORY: Helen is a sweet poodle mix puppy who came to us after a breeder was unable to sell her because she is deaf and has significant vision impairment. Helen is blind in at least one eye, and it is possible that she can see shadows from the other.

Helen’s disabilities are the result of a genetic issue associated with double-merle breeding. Merle is a beautiful coat pattern that many people love, but breeding two merle dogs together can result in puppies inheriting two copies of the merle gene. These puppies can be born with hearing and vision abnormalities, including deafness and blindness. Sadly, Helen is one of those puppies.

But Helen doesn’t know that she is different.

She is simply a puppy who wants what every puppy wants—a safe home, someone to love her, and a family who will give her the chance to grow up knowing she is cherished.

Because Helen cannot hear, her family will need to learn how to communicate with her through hand signals, touch, and visual cues. Because her vision is limited, she will also benefit from a predictable environment and a family willing to help her navigate the world safely. Dogs with vision and hearing impairments can learn to adapt remarkably well when given patience, consistency, and a little time.

Helen isn’t looking for someone to feel sorry for her. She’s looking for someone who will see the puppy underneath the challenges.

Her perfect family will understand that adopting Helen will require some extra patience and a willingness to make accommodations for her disabilities. In return, they will get the opportunity to watch this special little girl learn, grow, and discover just how wonderful life can be.

Helen’s beginning may not have been what any puppy deserves, but her future can be.

If you’re the person who can look past what Helen cannot do and see everything she can be, she may be waiting for you.
