Meet sweet adoptable deaf Australian Shepherd mix (may have some boxer in him) Blue who is a 5 year old deaf dog looking for a loving forever home with someone who will cherish him and always keep him safe
From his caregiver: Blue is a five year old, 74lb Deaf, Australian Shepard mix will be your (immediate) best friend, cuddle buddy, workout partner, walk motivator, and conversation starter with anyone and everyone needs a new family (thru no fault of his).
Blue was born deaf, has selective vision (like a person – he sees what he wants to), has crazy sniffing power (can smell a can of tuna being opened from a deep sleep in another room) and LOVES being with people. A friend who watched him for an extended period summed him up: “Blue is really the most happy-go-lucky dog I’ve ever known.”
I adopted him from local shelter several years ago and expected that this would be his forever home – but changes in my personal situation have made that impossible – as I have to relocate across country and cannot have a dog in my new living situation.
Blue transitioned to being part of the family without missing a beat – jumped right in car, walked confidently into the house, relaxed on the couch, sat (or laid) on me a time or two, and then enjoyed coming out onto the deck. He slept with me the first night. And pretty much every other night since (if it gets too hot he likes the tile floor in the bathroom).
I THINK Blue would be best as an only fur baby but may be okay with a laid back dog his own size – and would love having more than one person to consider family as he loves whenever we have visitors and meets new people everywhere go (I’m sure I get quite boring). While he has not been in a household with little children, he is very inquisitive and wants to be their best friend after meeting (this goes with adults too!) He seems to tolerate other animals, but he loves people!
Since joining me he lived with smaller dogs for short periods of time (when staying with friend or when my daughter and her dog are in town), but he doesn’t know his own size, and his head alone could sink a small ship. While he might like bonding with a kitten, I would not recommend him joining a family with an existing cat. He can be territorial with toys – which may be due to him not knowing when others are approaching. He needs a family that will have someone around most of the time (I try not to leave him alone for more than 5 hours) and will embrace having a dog who adores you and wants to be by your side 24/7.
He has regularly gone to doggie day care, has been boarded for week long stays, has been professionally groomed, and loves to be blow-dried after getting wet in the rain/snow. He has not been crated in the house – although at day care he signals when he wants a break to go into his crate.
He knows a few hand “commands”, travels in crate (vs. sit on my lap when I drive), sleeps in his bed under my desk while I work, loves to go on walks, bask in the sun on the deck and hang around the kitchen for a random fruit or vegetable treat.
He does have a sensitive stomach – so treats need to be limited (I rely heavily on carrots) and digestive care kibble.
Blue’s adoption fee is $250 to a screened and approved home only.
