An abandoned department store in the heart of Newcastle is about to spring back to life in spectacular fashion. The old Debenhams building inside Eldon Square Shopping Centre will soon host Freight Island a massive new rooftop destination opening in June. This twenty million dollar project promises to become the largest food drink and entertainment spot in any UK city centre. Spanning nearly sixty thousand square feet on the top floor the venue turns a forgotten space into a lively island above the city.
Visitors will discover the main hub known as the Plant Room where everyone gathers under a retractable roof for dining and good times. Twelve street food style restaurants will line the area offering favorites like burgers from Meat Stack crispy pizzas from I Scream for Pizza and sweet treats from Churros Kingdom. Four bars will keep the drinks flowing including a dedicated aperitivo spot with cocktails on tap and refreshing brews from Two by Two Brewing. The atmosphere draws clear inspiration from vibrant spots such as New Yorks Coney Island and Copenhagens Tivoli Gardens creating a fun playful escape right in the city.
Music fans will love the dedicated Music Box venue that holds up to twelve hundred people. It will host touring bands theatre performances festivals and DJ sets with something for every taste. Organizers even plan family friendly raves during the day along with big screens for live sports so everyone from kids to adults can join in the excitement. The whole setup feels like a permanent festival perched high above the streets with outdoor vibes and indoor comfort no matter the weather.
Co founder and managing director of Freight Island Dan Morris explained the vision behind this ambitious build. He noted that the team designed it for scale and long term impact hoping to mirror the strong results already seen elsewhere. In Manchester the original Freight Island location has boosted the local economy by nearly forty million dollars since opening back in 2020. That success convinced the group to expand quickly with similar concepts now rolling out in other cities.
Newcastle is not the only place getting this treatment this year. Construction will soon begin on a site inside Trinity Shopping Centre in Leeds featuring street food stalls bars and live entertainment plus a terrace overlooking City Square. Down in London the Brixton location opens on May seventh as the capitals biggest rooftop venue capable of welcoming a thousand guests at once. It will include chef residencies cocktail bars DJ nights food festivals and even a special fanzone for the upcoming World Cup matches with family sessions planned throughout the summer.
