
What Is Valerian Root?
Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is a flowering perennial herb native to Europe and parts of Asia. The medicinal portion of the plant is its root, which contains naturally occurring compounds believed to have calming effects on the nervous system. Despite its powerful, pungent fragrance—often compared to old sweat socks or aged cheese—valerian is adored by cats and enjoyed by most dogs.
