Inside the Historic Rescue of 500 Beagles from Ridglan Farms with Beagle Freedom Project.

There are moments in animal rescue that forever change the people who witness them. For Shannon Keith, founder and president of Beagle Freedom Project (BFP), the release of 500 beagles from Ridglan Farms in Dane County, Wisconsin, was one of those moments.
For years, Ridglan Farms operated as a commercial breeding facility supplying beagles for animal testing laboratories. Behind locked gates, generations of dogs spent their entire lives in metal cages, knowing nothing beyond concrete floors, fluorescent lights, and human contact associated with fear. Many had never walked on grass, felt the warmth of sunshine, or looked up at an open sky.
Now, after months of confidential negotiations, their lives are finally beginning again.
“This particular rescue had been in the works since early February of 2026,” Keith explained. “These negotiations take time, patience, and an enormous amount of coordination behind the scenes.”
The effort culminated in one of the largest beagle rescues in recent history. While approximately 2,100 beagles are ultimately being released from Ridglan Farms, Beagle Freedom Project is overseeing the placement of 500 of those dogs, drawing upon years of experience rescuing animals from laboratories, breeding facilities, and other forms of institutional cruelty.
It was an operation unlike anything most rescuers will ever experience.
