Welcome to New Ulm, Minnesota. Mom has been to Neu Ulm in Germany a few times back when she lived there but the one here in our state was new for her. Of course, finding this mural was number one on our list. Lucky for us it was the middle of the week and pretty warm out, so not many people were wandering around to interfere with our photos.
Have you heard of Hermann the German? We have heard the name but knew nothing about him until now. His footprint hangs on the side of a building right by where we parked. It is huge and very strange looking. Then we read the plaque next to it. Of course, we touched it because you know we love fun!
There is a statue of this guy in town too but when we arrived we realized it was not for us. He is thirty two feet tall and on top of a monument making him one hundred two feet up in the air. There is a spiral stairs going up to him but Mom had no desire to go up there.
Next we found the Glockenspiel. Now this is more our speed than Hermann was. The tower is forty five feet tall with thirty seven bronze bells weighing over two tons, and rotating three foot high figurines depicting town history. We are wondering why everything is so tall in this town? The Glockenspiel plays music every day at three, and five pm. It was too hot to stay to hear it play.
On our walk around the main street of New Ulm we also found the Follow Your Bliss mural. It is in a narrow alley so Mom could not get a shot of the whole thing but she got us and the main part of the mural. Our little walk around town after our trials was fun but it was pretty warm and we were ready to head back home. We’ll have a few more fun finds on Friday for you.
