Carlsbad captures the essence of the Southern California lifestyle – laid-back, sun-soaked and effortlessly inviting.

My husband Greg and I took a week to visit Carlsbad, California with our dog, Honey by our side. It was going to be an exciting trip from flying from Boise, Idaho to John Wayne Airport in Orange County and then a rental car for a short hour drive south to the lovely seaside town of Carlsbad.
Checking In, Tails Up
We checked in at Cape Rey Carlsbad Beach, where the vibe is relaxed coastal chic and dogs are clearly part of the plan. Honey was greeted like a returning regular with a welcome sign featuring her photo and name. The real delight came when I discovered the doggie menu. Yes, an actual menu. While I sipped something cold and citrusy, Honey enjoyed her own chef-approved treat, tail wagging like she’d just won the lottery.Â
After a long travel day, we were ready to dig into our own dinner’s as we dined al fresco with Honey. I chose the Ginger Glazed Salmon while Greg had no trouble polishing off the 8oz Filet Mignon. The California Micro Dairy Cheese Board is a good way to start or end the meal in my opinion.
Staying at Cape Rey Carlsbad Beach, a Hilton Resort & Spa with your dog feels a bit like checking into a seaside club where wagging tails are part of the dress code.
