We (Steph and Mike) have owned Tumble washable rugs for four years.
When we became first-time homeowners in 2022, just one month before our second child was born, life threw us a couple of major curveballs.
A week after moving into our home, the sewer pipe just outside our laundry room broke and flooded our first floor and basement with dirty water. Then, about a week later, our dachshund became partially paralyzed due to Stage 4 IVDD and underwent emergency back surgery. Did I mention I was 34 weeks pregnant?
Fast forward a few months, and our adorable little dachshund was thankfully recovering from IVDD surgery, although his back legs were still weak and wobbly.
We had also finally begun putting our home back together — installing new hardwood floors, replacing walls with water damage, and repainting much of the house.
With beautiful new hardwood floors to protect and an unsteady dog who needed safe, non-slip, and non-trip surfaces underfoot, we immediately began searching for area rugs. That’s when we discovered Tumble washable rugs.
Today, our home is even busier. We have three young kids (now 7, 4, and 2), our long-haired dachshund Django, and a very furry Shetland Sheepdog in the family who is at our house all the time. We’ve tried a number of washable rugs over the years, including ones from another major brand in the space (it rhymes with Tuggable…), some more budget-friendly styles from Costco, and even a few from Amazon.
In our experience, Tumble rugs are the nicest washable rugs we’ve found for our house. What Are Tumble Rugs?
Tumble rugs are machine washable, low-profile area rugs designed for modern, high-traffic homes. They’re spill-proof, stain-resistant, water-repellent, and come with a cushioned non-slip rug pad.
Compared to traditional area rugs, Tumble rugs are definitely thinner, which is part of what makes them so practical for everyday life and easy to clean. They work especially well in kitchens, hallways, entryways, dining spaces, and other hardworking areas of the home where easy care and a lower-profile rug are major advantages.
If you are looking for a thick, plush, high-pile rug to cozy up on in a family room or den, though, Tumble rugs are not what you’re looking for.
Are Tumble truly spill-proof and stain-resistant?
Yes. Tumble rugs are treated with a water-based solution that helps liquid bead up on the surface instead of soaking in right away.
They are also stain-resistant, which we have found to be very true in real life. Most stains come out very easily. Occasionally, we do have to scrub a bit more depending on the substance involved (dark-colored markers can be annoying), but in our experience, the stains always come out.
One thing to keep in mind: after years of use and repeated washing, the spill-proof effect does fade to a degree. We have many Tumble rugs throughout our home, and we’ve noticed that our kitchen rugs in particular — which have been washed countless times over the years — are not as spill-proof as they once were. While spills and stains still come out nicely, the liquid-beading effect has diminished, so we end up washing the kitchen rugs more frequently as a result.
Are Tumble rugs safe for kids and dogs?
Yes. All Tumble rugs and rug pads are OEKO-TEX® certified and tested against a wide range of substances, including PFAS (like PFOA and PFOS), VOCs, BPA, heavy metals, phthalates, formaldehyde, and flame retardants. According to Tumble, this testing is done in accordance with U.S. safety standards and California’s Prop 65 at an independent, accredited lab.
When we were first shopping for rugs, finding non-toxic options was a priority. We have young kids who are always barefoot, playing on the floor, and crawling around. Add in two dogs who spend plenty of time playing and licking crumbs off the rugs.
With so many washable rug brands on the market today, it can be hard to know which companies truly prioritize health and safety — and which ones are simply trying to capitalize on a growing trend. Tumble’s rigorous safety testing and certifications helped us feel very comfortable using these rugs throughout our home.
What about dog hair and pee accidents?
In our experience, Tumble rugs are one of the best options for homes with dogs, especially if dog hair and accidents are concerns. Because the rugs are machine washable and stain-resistant, they are far more forgiving than traditional rugs.
If your dog has an accident, you can quickly blot up the excess and put your Tumble rug straight into the washing machine. Unlike thicker, more traditional rugs that absorb stains and odors, Tumble rugs wash beautifully and do not hold onto lingering smells.

4-Year Review: How Our Tumble Rugs Have Held Up Over the Years
Almost any new rug looks good right out of the box. But how do Tumble rugs hold up over the years?
We’ve had the same Tumble rugs in our home for four years (since early 2022). Here’s what I can tell you.
Our kitchen rugs have been worked hard
Our kitchen is the most high-traffic room in our home — and the messiest one. We see endless crumbs and food dropping on the floor at each meal, frequent milk and water spills, kids dragging chairs around, and dogs running around hoping food hits the floor (as it often does).
For four years, we had three Tumble rugs in the Hali Coral & Khaki pattern in this space: one 6×9 rug under our kitchen table and two 2.5×7 runners around our island.
Despite taking a lot of beatings over the years, our rugs have held up very well.
Are they still absolutely pristine? No. The coloring on the rugs is slightly faded from washing and the edges are finally starting to pill a little from our vacuum (we don’t always avoid the edges with our vacuum, as Tumble advises). But are they still in very good condition nonetheless, and spills and stains still come out to this day.
Full disclosure: We recently added three new Tumble rugs to our kitchen in the Lisa style (Taupe & Multi), and all of the photos in this review show those rugs. After updating our kitchen lighting and bringing in a new 6-person kitchen table for our growing family, we decided to upgrade our rugs as well and landed on the beautiful, neutral Lisa design.

Our other Tumble rugs still look excellent
Outside of the kitchen, our Tumble rugs are in excellent and “like new” condition. Our long entry hallway runner, upstairs hall runner, and dining room rug have all held up beautifully.
Out of all three, our entryway Tumble runner (Hali Coral & Khaki, 2.5×10″) has seen the most foot traffic and messes. At one point, our handyman’s boots tracked a thick line of mud down the center. It looked awful in the moment, but I was able to get the mark off relatively quickly with a rag and cold water.
Worth mentioning — this same entryway runner also sits near a large, sun-soaked window and hasn’t faded at all over the years.
Our kitchen rugs show normal wear for a high-traffic family kitchen after years of daily use and daily messes. Every other Tumble rug in our home still looks perfect. Considering we have three young kids, a dachshund, and a Shetland Sheepdog who visits frequently, we’re extremely pleased with how well they’ve all held up.

Are Tumble Rugs Easy to Clean?
Yes. This is one of their biggest strengths.
Most of the time, we do not machine wash our Tumble rugs immediately when something happens. Day to day, vacuuming and spot cleaning are more than enough. Cold water on a rag takes care of dirt, food, and marks from crayons, markers, etc. A paper towel or dry cloth works well for basic spills. Vacuuming takes care of crumbs and dog hair.
When a big mess happens (think a carton of milk spilling everywhere or a 2 year old overturning a plate of spaghetti and meatballs), we simply wipe up the mess and throw our Tumble rug in the washing machine.
Machine washing is what makes these rugs such a relief to own.
How we clean our Tumble rugs
- For crumbs, dirt, and pet hair: vacuum regularly
- For small messes: spot clean with water and a rag
- For bigger messes or when a rug just needs a refresh: wash in cold water on a delicate cycle
- For drying: hang dry (personal recommendation); Tumble says putting your rug in the dryer on the gentlest setting is fine, as well.
Tumble Rugs Pros and Cons
Let’s get into Tumble rug cons first, because they’re worth knowing upfront. Tumble rugs are not perfect, and there are a few things I think shoppers should understand before making their first Tumble purchase.
Tumble rugs are thin
If you are expecting a plush, cushy, or high-pile area rug, Tumble rugs are not that.
The thin, lower-profile rug construction is exactly what makes Tumble rugs washable and practical, but it also means they are not cozy, high-pile rugs.
For us, that tradeoff makes perfect sense in the kitchen, hallways, entryway, and under the dining room table. In our family room, living room, and primary bedroom, however, we prefer thicker, higher-pile rugs for extra softness and comfort.
The interlocking rug pad pieces occasionally disconnect during cleaning
This happens from time to time — usually when I’m yanking up one end of a runner in order to vacuum up crumbs underneath it. It’s a little annoying, but my 7-year old always loves putting back together the pieces.
Wrinkling in our most-used rugs
Our kitchen rugs, which are now several years old and have been washed many times, are more prone to a bit of wrinkling. Our other Tumble rugs in our home (also four years old) have zero wrinkling to this day and look brand new.
Personally, I do not find the wrinkling in our most-used kitchen rugs to be especially bothersome, but it is worth mentioning. Every other Tumble rug in our home still lies beautifully flat.

- Washable rugs in general are more utilitarian than a true luxury heirloom rug
For us, the pros clearly outweigh the cons, but these are still worth considering before making a decision.
Our Tumble Rugs by Room
One thing I always like to know when reading a review is exactly what someone bought and where they used it, so here is our real-life Tumble setup.
Kitchen
For four years, we had the Hali rug in Coral & Khaki in our kitchen: one 6×9 under the kitchen table and two 2.5×7 runners around the kitchen island. We absolutely love the warmth and color in the Hali pattern.
Just recently, we updated our kitchen with the Lisa rug in Taupe & Multi in the same sizes. This was mostly a style refresh and partly an upgrade after we installed new kitchen lighting and bought a new kitchen table.
Entry hallway
We have a 2.5×10 Hali runner in Coral & Khaki in our entry hallway; it’s been there since early 2022. This rug sees sneakers, dirt from dog paws, leaves, rainwater, and a lot of direct sunlight. It has held up incredibly well.
Upstairs hall
Upstairs, we have the 2.5×10 Shiraz runner in Terracotta & Sky in our main hallway. This rug still looks perfect and adds a touch of style and warmth to the area.
Dining room
In our dining room, we have the neutral and light Canyon rug in Oatmeal & Grey in 8×10. At one point, we had a really pretty jute rug there with great texture, but it could not be cleaned easily. The jute area rug looked beautiful, but with kids and dogs, it was not a smart nor practical choice. We swapped in the Tumble rug and realized we should have had it there from the start.
