Xena – GA – Deaf Dogs Rock

From her caregiver: I adopted Xena 3 years ago. She is listed as American Staffordshire Terrier. My understanding is that she was an outside dog only and either abandoned or risk of being abandoned. A neighbor stepped in and got her sponsored by a rescue.

I’ve recently moved in with family for financial reasons. The home is large and busy. She is more anxious than usual and has started barking at my mom who is now afraid of her. I work long hours, 30 minutes for my parents home, so she is crated for too long. My parents are not comfortable handling her, even letting her out to potty. Our lives have been turned upside down and I know she deserves better.

Xena is an absolute love bug! Most importantly, she is deaf and requires a safe, secure space and a patient family. She knows a few hand signals. She has NO recall and needs to be leashed. She gets along well with other dogs, has lived with two cats and tolerates a feral three-year-old visiting. Her best bud was a male one year old golden doodle. She is medium energy, loves long walks and long naps! She has been to breweries, outdoor festivals, pool parties and public walking spaces. She is always happy to see people and other animals on the walking trails and in public. She also participates in play group when boarded. While I believe she would adapt to almost any home, she would be happiest in a home with middle aged residents/owners, professionals who work from home or a small quiet family. Being completely deaf, she can be anxious in large busy spaces and starlted by people she doesn’t see approaching. She is crate trained. She doesn’t love the crate but may be destructive if left in supervised. I always crated her when I was gone from the house. She rarely barks (a few minutes when crated), is food motivated (training) but not food aggressive.

She was fine with my 73 yo mom until last March when she would stop by to walk her because my son broke his ankle. I would describe her as guarded and cautious when mom approaches. She has not bit her but I haven’t given her the chance.
