What do I need to teach my dog the recall?
Whats the best technique for teaching a dog to come back?
In my PDF document – Teaching Your Dog To Come When Called – The Recall, I delve in to the reasons why a dog does’t come back and how you can overcome this with a good dog training technique. It’s hard work and persistence is required, but we have the information you need and with the correct dog leads, you are on the road to success.
What is the best dog lead for teaching the recall?
A Long Line or ‘dog training lead’ is a dog lead that allows restricted and controlled freedom. Combine a 10 metre dog lead with our Teach the Recall document and your dog training success is at your fingertips – literally.
Is a collar or harness best for recall training?
This depends on your dog and how they react on a long line. If you have a dodderer with no likelihood of them going to the end of a lead like a missile then you are ok, but in general terms of safety and best practice a harness is better. A collar should be properly fitted with no risk of it coming off, and this goes for harnesses too as they do come off sometimes. Any of our dog collars are perfect, but if you choose a harness then our Marty Harness is also a good option.
Where should I be teaching the recall?
All the information for distraction control is in the document. Initially you would be looking to find the quietest place possible. Start from room to room in the house, but do read the PDF first as it’s unlikely you’ll be using a long line in the house – the reason why is in the document.
