Smile if your dog has healthy teeth! February is Pet Dental Health month. This set of teeth belongs to me, Nelson, so they are four years old, never been professionally cleaned. The vet is always impressed when she looks in my mouth. I’m happy my teeth are in good shape as they are super important. Today we are going to share our dental routine with you.
Teeth Brushing
Bailie is in charge of teeth brushing. Every night we get ready for bed and have our teeth brushed. Mom has tried different toothbrushes over the years but finds her old ones work the best. We have dog toothpaste that tastes good and we don’t mind getting our chompers brushed at all. It helps that Mom started brushing them when we were little puppies so we are very used to it.
Single Ingredient Chews
Most evenings before bedtime, we have chews. Mom is big on all natural, single ingredient items for us so we get different things like half pigs ears, bladder sticks, beef gullet strips or sticks, joint jerky and beef trachea. Some items like the pig ears are high in fat so we only get halves and only once or twice a month. Mom gives us beef trachea often as it is low in fat and calories, has lots of glucosamine and chondroitin for joint health, and the ridges and shape really scrub the teeth and work the gums.
PlaqueOff
Our biggest weapon in keeping our teeth healthy is PlaqueOff. We talk about it every year at least once. Mom sprinkles it on our breakfast every day, we love it and eat it right down with our food. When we told our vet we use it, she was super happy as she too finds it to be very helpful in canine dental health. Every morning I whine waiting for breakfast but Mom always tells me I have to wait until the PlaqueOff is on. She is right but I wish she could serve up my meal faster!
